NME
NME is the shortened name for The New Musical Express, it is a popular music magazine which is published weekly and has been since 1952, and in 1970 it became the best selling magazine. NME was the first British paper to include a singles chart. The magazine is published in the UK by a company named ipc media which is owned by Time inc, Time inc is the leading publisher in the UK and US, and produces approximately 150 titles world wide. Time inc is owned by Time Warner which is the world’s second largest entertainment company.

My magazine

My magazine is going to be aimed at both genders; it is going to mainly be based around R&B but will also include other music genres. R&B has a mixture of different artists that will appeal to both male and females and this will help to open it up to both genders. The age range I am aiming my magazine at is 16-28, this will attract a wider audience because it is quite a wide range. Today’s music is mainly R&B, the UK top 40 reflects this, and this shows what young people of today listen to.
In my magazine I am going to include a range of articles including interviews and artist’s fashion.  My main article is going to be an interview about an artist’s choice of fashion and how they became famous. This will appeal to my target audience as this is what they asked for in my target market survey.
Another way to attract my target market is to make my front page as striking and appealing as I possibly can. I will do this by using bold headings (in the font chosen previously) and in the colour scheme also chosen before. I will keep a consistent colour scheme running through my magazine.  I intend to make my magazine looks as professional as I can.

Final Magazine Layout

I have decided on this layout for my magazine because it is simplistic and organsied like my target market wanted. It will include and equal share of images and text in my chosen turquoise, black and white colour scheme.

Colour Schemes

The colour scheme I chose will need to appeal to both males and females. I have used the colour schemes from my questionnaire to decide which one to use in my final product.

This is the colour scheme I will be using, this fits the requirements I need to make my magazine appeal to my target market. It is also simplistic and therefore will not make my magazine look cluttered. From my questonnaire I can see that my target market like this colour scheme.

I like this colour scheme as it has a very professional appearance. The colour scheme is very minimalistic but this works to its advantage because if you have a cluttered colour scheme your potential customers may be put off with the busy aesthetics.

I don’t feel that this combination of colours works particularly well, the read and the orange are contrasting colours and therefore cause a clash. Although this colour scheme was one of the most popular on my survey I do not feel it is suitable for the use of which I require.

This font would be perfect if my magazine was aimed at a purely female based target audience however, my magazine is aimed at females but with males aspects and this wouldn’t fit in with the specification requirements of that specific aspect.

Font Ideas

The font I intend to use needs to be one that stands out when the magazine is amoungst others on the shelf. It needs to be eye-catching and simple to immediatley attract attention and deflect the eye from other competition names.
This font is very eye-catching, the constant use of capitals mean that the main text is easy to read. The font is dissimilar to any other magazine font currently used and therefore would stand out from competition. Contradicting this is the use of the 'blur' effect, this makes the title hard to read and therefore this font wouldn't be suitable for the use of a masthead on a magazine.

This font is very basic and therefore very easy to read. Again, the use of constant capitals ensure that the buyer finds the masthead easy to read in just a quick glance when chosing which magazine to purchase. On the other hand the font is simple and lacks the appeal of something different to attract the purchasers attention.

This font has a unique appeal, it appeals to both genders which would be suitable for my magazine. This font would be easy to read at a glance and hence hold the ability to draw attention to potential buyers. I feel that this font has an appeal to it that would differentiate it from other contesting magazines.
This is the font I will be using on my final magazine because I feel that it would fit in with all the aspects of which I want my magazine to meet. It attracts both a male and female target market and doesnt look as though it is from a certain genre of music although, it does fit in with the main theme of R'n'B very well. I have never seen this font used on a magazine cover before and whichever colour I chose to use the font will still stand out clearly against most backgrounds.

I feel that this font would only appeal to a male target audience which wouldnt be suitable for the magazine of which I am producing. It has a Army feel to it hence why I believe it would be aimed at the male audeience. The font, however, does have an appeal to it that some basic fonts do not have as altough it is block letters and very easy to read it has a different look with the gaps in between some of the areas of which the letter should join.

My inital thought on this font is that it isnt bold enough to stand out to a potential buyer and therefore wouldnt attract the right amount of buyers therefore I will not be using this font. Yet there is still something that is appealing about this font, I feel that it is the pure simplicity of the font and the fixed width that is used. This font could be difficult to read from a distance.

This font is unsuitable to be used as a masthead font. I feel that this is the case because it is not easy to read by all people and it would put people off if they see it at a quick glance. This font would need a darker colour to make it stand out and therefore wouldnt be suitable if lighter colours were to be used.
